Chapter 19: Rāma Promises to Leave for the Forest
Text 2.19.39
तं गुणैः समतां प्राप्तो भ्राता विपुलविक्रमः।
सौमित्रिरनुवव्राज धारयन्दुःखमात्मजम्॥
taṁ guṇaiḥ samatāṁ prāpto bhrātā vipula-vikramaḥ
saumitrir anuvavrāja dhārayan duḥkham ātmajam
tam = Him; guṇaiḥ samatām = the same qualities as His; prāptaḥ = having attained; bhrātā = His brother; vipula-vikramaḥ = of extensive prowess; saumitriḥ = Lakṣmaṇa, the son of Sumitrā; anuvavrāja = followed; dhārayan = controlled and; duḥkham = unhappiness; ātmajam = His.
Having attained the same qualities as His, His brother Lakṣmaṇa of extensive prowess, the son of Sumitrā, controlled His unhappiness and followed Him.
Taṁ guṇaiḥ samatāṁ prāptaḥ indicates that Lakṣmaṇa also became equipoised in happiness and unhappiness.
