सोऽपश्यत्पुरुषं तत्र वृद्धं परमपूजितम्।
उपविष्टं गृहद्वारि तिष्ठतश्चापरान्बहून्॥
so ’paśyat puruṣaṁ tatra vṛddhaṁ parama-pūjitam
upaviṣṭaṁ gṛha-dvāri tiṣṭhataś cāparān bahūn
saḥ = He; apaśyat = saw; puruṣam = man; tatra = there; vṛddham = old; parama-pūjitam = an extremely honored; upaviṣṭam = sitting; gṛha-dvāri = by the door of the house; tiṣṭhataḥ = standing [around]; ca = as well as; aparān = others; bahūn = many.
There He saw an extremely honored old man sitting by the door of the house as well as many others standing [around].
The [old] man was the superintendent of the gatekeepers [of Kausalyā’s house].
GLOSS. This man was sitting because he was old and because he was extremely honored by others who had weapons in their hands.
