Chapter 20: Kausalyā’s Lamentation
Text 2.20.37
एक एव हि वन्ध्यायाः शोको भवति मानसः।
अप्रजास्मीति सन्तापो न ह्यन्यः पुत्र विद्यते॥
eka eva hi vandhyāyāḥ śoko bhavati mānasaḥ
aprajāsmīti santāpo na hy anyaḥ putra vidyate
ekaḥ = one; eva hi = only; vandhyāyāḥ = of a barren woman; śokaḥ = distress; bhavati = there is; mānasaḥ = in the mind; aprajā = childless; asmi iti = Oh, I am; santāpaḥ = pain; na hi = not; anyaḥ = other; putra = son; vidyate = she does have.
Son, there is only one distress in the mind of a barren woman: “Oh, I am childless!” She does not have any other pain.1
1 Santāpaḥ na hi anyaḥ vidyate literally means “There is no other pain [in her].”
“Other pain” refers to the pain due to her separation from her child and physical pain due to rolling on the ground and so on.
