Chapter 21: Rāma Consoles Kausalyā and Lakṣmaṇa
Text 2.21.28
यदि त्वं यास्यसि वनं त्यक्त्वा मां शोकलालसाम्॥
अहं प्रायमिहासिष्ये न हि शक्ष्यामि जीवितुम्॥
yadi tvaṁ yāsyasi vanaṁ tyaktvā māṁ śoka-lālasām
ahaṁ prāyam ihāsiṣye na hi śakṣyāmi jīvitum
yadi = if; tvam = You; yāsyasi = go; vanam = to the forest; tyaktvā = abandon and; mām = me; śoka-lālasām = I am overwhelmed in sorrow; aham = I; prāyam = with a vow to fast until death; iha = here; āsiṣye = will sit; na = not; hi = because; śakṣyāmi = I will be able; jīvitum = to live.
I am overwhelmed in sorrow. If You abandon me and go to the forest, I will sit here with a vow to fast until death because I will not be able to live.
