Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 21: Rāma Consoles Kausalyā and Lakṣmaṇa
Text 2.21.38

तदेतत्तु मया कार्यं क्रियते भुवि नान्यथा।
पितुर्हि वचनं कुर्वन्न कश्चिन्नाम हीयते॥

tad etat tu mayā kāryaṁ kriyate bhuvi nānyathā
pitur vacanaṁ kurvan na kaścin nāma hīyate

tat = therefore; etat tu = this instruction of My father; mayā = I; kāryam = which should be carried out; kriyate = am; bhuvi = in this world; na = not; anyathā = disregarding; pituḥ = his father’s; vacanam = [dhārmika] instructions; kurvan = by carrying out; na kaścit = no one; nāma = for it is well known that; hīyate = has been destroyed.

Therefore, I am not disregarding this instruction of My father which should be carried out in this world for it is well known that no one has been destroyed by carrying out his father’s [dhārmika] instructions.1

1 By carrying out his father’s dhārmika instructions, not adhārmika instructions. Lord Rāma will clarify this by observing that King Daśaratha’s instructions were in line with Vedic dharma. That consideration is always there.
