Chapter 21: Rāma Consoles Kausalyā and Lakṣmaṇa
Text 2.21.65

प्रसादयन्नरवृषभः स्वमातरं पराक्रमाज्जिगमिषुरेव दण्डकान्।
अथानुजं भृशमनुशास्य दर्शनं चकार तां हृदि जननीं प्रदक्षिणम्॥

prasādayan nara-vṛṣabhaḥ sva-mātaraṁ
parākramāj jigamiṣur eva daṇḍakān
athānujaṁ bhṛśam anuśāsya darśanaṁ
cakāra tāṁ hṛdi jananīṁ pradakṣiṇam

prasādayan = [despite] appeasing; nara-vṛṣabhaḥ = Prince Rāma; sva-mātaram = His mother; parākramāt = by the force of Kaikeyī’s order; jigamiṣuḥ eva = wanted to go; daṇḍakān = to Daṇḍakāraṇya; atha = then; anujam = to His younger brother; bhṛśam = clearly; anuśāsya darśanam = He revealed His opinion; cakāra tām hṛdi  = and decided to; jananīm = His mother [before departing to the forest]; pradakṣiṇam = circumambulate.

[Despite] appeasing His mother, Prince Rāma wanted to go to Daṇḍakāraṇya by the force of Kaikeyī’s order. He then clearly revealed His opinion to His younger brother and decided to circumambulate His mother [before departing to the forest].

Kaikeyī had ordered Rāma:

rāma tasmād itaḥ śīghraṁ
vanaṁ tvaṁ gantum arhasi

“Rāma, quickly go to the forest from here.” (Rāmāyaṇa 2.19.14)

In this world, there are three famous goals that can be achieved in human life: dharma, artha and kāma. One should only pursue the attainment of dharma [in this life] because it is generates [enhanced] artha and kāma [in the next life], and because the pursuit of artha and kāma [in this life] are fraught with dangers. This has been established in this chapter.

GLOSS. The opinion of Lord Rāma that He revealed to Lakṣmaṇa is the confidential truth about dharma.
