Chapter 22: Rāma Instructs Lakṣmaṇa
Text 2.22.16
कैकेय्याः प्रतिपत्तिर्हि कथं स्यान्मम पीडने।
यदि भावो न दैवोऽयं कृतान्तविहितो भवेत्॥
kaikeyyāḥ pratipattir hi kathaṁ syān mama pīḍane
yadi bhāvo na daivo ’yaṁ kṛtānta-vihito bhavet
kaikeyyāḥ = for her to conceive of; pratipattiḥ hi = this idea; katham syāt = how is it possible; mama = Me; pīḍane = to torment; yadi = if; bhāvaḥ = intention; na = not; daivaḥ = of Queen Kaikeyī; ayam = this; kṛtānta-vihitaḥ = ordained by providence; bhavet = was.
If this intention of Queen Kaikeyī was not ordained by providence, how is it possible for her to conceive of this idea to torment Me?
[It should be understood that] “torment” is used to reflect Lakṣmaṇa’s view.
