yady ayaṁ kilbiṣād bhedaḥ kṛto ’py evaṁ na gṛhyate
jāyate tatra me duḥkhaṁ dharma-saṅgaś ca garhitaḥ
tavāyaṁ dharma-saṁyogo lokasyāsya vigarhitaḥ
yadi1 ayam = this; kilbiṣāt = because of their false boons; bhedaḥ = obstacle to Your coronation; kṛtaḥ = Queen Kaikeyī and King Daśaratha have created; api = though; evam = that this is the case; na gṛhyate = You don’t accept; jāyate tatra me duḥkham = I am distressed because; dharma-saṅgaḥ ca = association with such “dharma”; garhitaḥ = is condemned; tava = Your; ayam dharma-saṁyogaḥ = association with such “dharma”; lokasya = world; asya = in this; vigarhitaḥ = will be condemned.
I am distressed because though Queen Kaikeyī and King Daśaratha have created this obstacle to Your coronation because of their false boons, You don’t accept that this is the case. Association with such “dharma” is condemned. Your association with such “dharma” will be condemned in this world.
1 Technical note: yadi api.
Now Lakṣmaṇa tells Rāma that there is only one reason why He is distressed: Rāma is bewildered [according to Lakṣmaṇa, of course].
Therefore Lakṣmaṇa didn’t want Rāma to carry out King Daśaratha’s instruction even in His mind. He states that in the next verse.
