Chapter 23: Lakṣmaṇa’s Arguments
Text 2.23.26

पूर्वराजर्षिवृत्त्या हि वनवासो विधीयते।
प्रजा निक्षिप्य पुत्रेषु पुत्रवत्परिपालने॥

pūrva-rāja-rṣi-vṛttyā hi vana-vāso vidhīyate
prajā nikṣipya putreṣu putravat paripālane

pūrva-rāja-ṛṣi-vṛttyā = in accordance with the conduct of previous saintly kings; hi = is actually; vana-vāsaḥ = residence in the forest; vidhīyate = prescribed to be taken up; prajāḥ = the citizens; nikṣipya = after one deposits; putreṣu = with one’s sons; putravat paripālane = so that they could be taken care of as if they were one’s own sons.

Residence in the forest, in accordance with the conduct of previous saintly kings, is actually prescribed to be taken up after one deposits the citizens with one’s sons so that they could be taken care of as if they were one’s own sons.
