आसां राम सपत्नीनां वस्तुं मध्ये न मे क्षमम्।
नय मामपि काकुत्स्थ वनं वन्यां मृगीमिव।
यदि ते गमने बुद्धिः कृता पितुरपेक्षया॥
āsāṁ rāma sapatnīnāṁ vastuṁ madhye na me kṣamam
naya mām api kākutstha vanaṁ vanyāṁ mṛgīm iva
yadi te gamane buddhiḥ kṛtā pitur apekṣayā
āsām = here; rāma = Rāma; sapatnīnām = of my co-wives; vastum = live; madhye = in the midst; na me kṣamam = I cannot; naya = take; mām = me; api = also; kākutstha = O descendant of Kakutstha; vanam = to the forest; vanyām = in the forest; mṛgīm = a doe; iva = [considering me to be] like; yadi = if; te gamane buddhiḥ kṛtā = if You have decided to depart [to the forest]; pituḥ = of Your father; apekṣayā = by the desire.
Rāma, I cannot live in the midst of my co-wives here. O descendant of Kakutstha, if You have decided to depart [to the forest] by the desire of Your father, take me also to the forest, [considering me to be] like a doe in the forest.
Even though she had agreed to Rāma’s departure to the forest and her residence in her city, remembering her co-wives, she requested Him to take her with Him in this verse.
Just as a doe in the forest is happy there, Kausalyā implies that she would also be happy there and that she wouldn’t trouble Rāma there.
