Chapter 24: Rāma Instructs Kausalyā
Text 2.24.24

दारुणश्चाप्ययं शोको यथैनं न विनाशयेत्।
राज्ञो वृद्धस्य सततं हितं चर समाहिता॥

dāruṇaś cāpy ayaṁ śoko yathainaṁ na vināśayet
rājño vṛddhasya satataṁ hitaṁ cara samāhitā

dāruṇaḥ ca api = terrible; ayam = this; śokaḥ = sorrow; yathā = in such a manner that; enam = him; na = not; vināśayet = does destroy; rājñaḥ = king; vṛddhasya = of the old; satatam = always; hitam = for the good; cara = act; samāhitā = with a composed mind.

With a composed mind, always act for the good of the old king in such a manner that this terrible sorrow does not destroy him.1

1 It was obvious to all that the king was in great distress over the turn of circumstances.
