Chapter 29: Sītā Persists in Requesting Him to Take Her to the Forest
Text 2.28.20
एवमस्मात्स्वकां नारी सुवृत्तां हि पतिव्रताम्॥
नाभिरोचयसे नेतुं त्वं मां केनेह हेतुना॥
evam asmāt svakāṁ nārī suvṛttāṁ hi pati-vratām
nābhirocayase netuṁ tvaṁ māṁ keneha hetunā
evam = despite this; asmāt = from this city; svakām = Your own; nārī = woman; suvṛttām hi = of good conduct; pati-vratām = who is chaste to her husband; na abhirocayase = are disinclined; netum = to take; tvam = You; mām = me; kena = for what; iha = now; hetunā = reason.
Despite this, for what reason are You now disinclined to take me, Your own woman of good conduct, who is chaste to her husband, from this city [with You]?
“Despite this” means “Despite this strong evidence from the Śruti.” Asmāt also indicates [that Sītā-devī inquires about the reason for His disinclination to take His own woman] duly given to Him in wedding.
