Chapter 29: Sītā Persists in Requesting Him to Take Her to the Forest
Text 2.29.22

यदि मां दुःखितामेवं वनं नेतुं न चेच्छसि।
विषमग्निं जलं वाहमास्थास्ये मृत्युकारणात्॥

yadi māṁ duḥkhitām evaṁ vanaṁ netuṁ na cecchasi
viṣam agniṁ jalaṁ vāham āsthāsye mṛtyu-kāraṇāt

yadi = if; mām = me; duḥkhitām = who am distressed; evam = thus; vanam = to the forest; netum = to take; na ca = not; icchasi = You do want; viṣam = poison; agnim = fire; jalam = water; = or; aham = I; āsthāsye = will resort to; mṛtyu-kāraṇāt = to kill [myself].

If You do not want to take me who am thus distressed to the forest, I will resort to poison, fire or water to kill [myself].1

1 “I will resort to poison, fire or water” means “I will drink poison or enter into fire or drown in water.” Of course, neither Lord Rāmacandra nor His eternal associates can factually die, since they exist forever in Ayodhyā in the spiritual world known as Vaikuṇṭha. But such sentiments are displayed out of prema-bhakti and, by the Lord’s arrangement, for educating us to avoid adharma and follow dharma while ever-increasingly engaging in sādhana-bhakti to reach bhāva-bhakti and prema-bhakti.
