Chapter 29: Sītā Persists in Requesting Him to Take Her to the Forest
Text 2.29.25
चिन्तयन्तीं तथा तां तु निवर्तयितुमात्मवान्।
ताम्रोष्ठीं स तदा सीतां काकुत्स्थो बह्वसान्त्वयत्॥
cintayantīṁ tathā tāṁ tu nivartayitum ātmavān
tāmroṣṭhīṁ sa tadā sītāṁ kākutstho bahv asāntvayat
cintayantīm = worried; tathā = then; tām tu = the; nivartayitum = to prevent [her from accompanying Him]; ātmavān = self-controlled; tāmra-oṣṭhīm = red-lipped; saḥ = the; tadā1 sītām = Sītā; kākutsthaḥ = descendant of Kakutstha; bahu = in many ways; asāntvayat = consoled.
The self-controlled descendant of Kakutstha then consoled the worried, red-lipped Sītā in many ways to prevent [her from accompanying Him].
[1] nirvyāpāra-sthitau kāla-viśeṣotsavayoḥ kṣaṇaḥ. (Amara)
1 Technical note: tadā asāntvayat.
“Red-lipped Sītā” indicates that she could not be prevented [from arguing on this matter despite] repeated consolations and so on.
