Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 28: Rāma Refuses to Accept Her Request
Text 2.28.7

गिरिनिर्झरसम्भूता गिरिकन्दरवासिनाम्।
सिंहानां निनदा दुःखाः श्रोतुं दुःखमतो वनम्॥

giri-nirjhara-sambhūtā giri-kandaravāsinām
siṁhānāṁ ninadā duḥkhāḥ śrotuṁ duḥkham ato vanam

giri-nirjhara-sambhūtāḥ = are enhanced in the mountains and waterfalls; giri-kandaravāsinām = living in the mountain caves; siṁhānām = of lions; ninadāḥ = the roars; duḥkhāḥ = they are painful; śrotum = to hear; duḥkham = is misery; ataḥ = therefore; vanam = a forest.

The roars of lions living in the mountain caves are enhanced in the mountains and waterfalls. They are painful to hear. Therefore, a forest is misery.

He now points out the difficulties inherent in a great forest.
