Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 30: Rāma Allows Sītā to Follow Him to the Forest
Text 2.30.8

स्वयं तु भार्यां कौमारीं चिरमध्युषितां सतीम्।
शैलूष इव मां राम परेभ्यो दातुमिच्छसि॥

svayaṁ tu bhāryāṁ kaumārīṁ ciram adhyuṣitāṁ satīm
śailūṣa iva māṁ rāma parebhyo dātum icchasi

svayam = personally; tu = but; bhāryām = wife; kaumārīm = married to You in my maidenhood; ciram = for a long time; adhyuṣitām = and who has lived [with You]; satīm = Your chaste; śailūṣaḥ = a man who lives off his wife 1; iva = like; mām = me; rāma = O Rāma; parebhyaḥ = to others; dātum = to give; icchasi = You want.

O Rāma, but, like a man who lives off his wife, You personally want to give me, Your chaste wife married to You in my maidenhood and who has lived [with You] for a long time, to others!

Upon observing that despite her statement that she would firmly uphold her chaste vows of service to Him, He did not agree to her coming with Him to the forest, Sītā-devī became angry and spoke this verse.
