Chapter 30: Rāma Allows Sītā to Follow Him to the Forest
Text 2.30.19
अथ मामेवमव्यग्रां वनं नैव नयिष्यसि।
विषमद्यैव पास्यामि माविशं द्विषतां वशम्॥
atha mām evam avyagrāṁ vanaṁ naiva nayiṣyasi
viṣam adyaiva pāsyāmi māviśaṁ dviṣatāṁ vaśam
atha = will; mām = me; evam = thus; avyagrām = undisturbed; vanam = to the forest; na eva = not; nayiṣyasi = You take; viṣam = poison; adya eva = now itself; pāsyāmi = I will drink; māviśam = [but] I would rather not come under; dviṣatām = of hostile people; vaśam = the control.
Will You not take me who am thus undisturbed to the forest? I will drink poison now itself, [but] I would rather not come under the control of hostile people.
Sītā-devī was undisturbed, that is, free from the fear of residing in the forest. If Rāmacandra would not take her with Him, she wanted to drink poison then and there, that is, in His very presence. She did not want to come under the control of hostile people, that is, Bharata and others.
