Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 30: Rāma Allows Sītā to Follow Him to the Forest
Text 2.30.37

देवगन्धर्वगोलोकान्ब्रह्मलोकांस्तथा नराः।
प्राप्नुवन्ति महात्मानो मातापितृपरायणाः॥

deva-gandharva-go-lokān brahma-lokāṁs tathā narāḥ
prāpnuvanti mahātmāno mātā-pitṛ-parāyaṇāḥ

deva-gandharva-go-lokān = the world of the deva-gandharvas, the moon; brahma-lokān = the world of Brahmā; tathā = and finally; narāḥ = men; prāpnuvanti = attain; mahā-ātmānaḥ = of firm minds; mātā-pitṛ-parāyaṇāḥ = exclusively engaged in service to one’s mother and father.

Men of firm minds, exclusively engaged in service to one’s mother and father, attain the world of the deva-gandharvas, the moon and finally the world of Brahmā.1

It is implied here that they sequentially reach Brahmaloka. Narāḥ (“men”) indicates that this is a general statement about men in all varṇas.1

GLOSS. The deva-gandharvas are direct servants of the devas.

1 Rāmāyaṇa-bhāva-dīpa: “gaur nāke vṛṣabhe candre iti viśvaḥ.
