Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 31: Rāma Allows Lakṣmaṇa to Follow Him to the Forest
Text 2.31.7

अनुज्ञातश्च भवता पूर्वमेव यदस्म्यहम्।
किमिदानीं पुनरिदं क्रियते मे निवारणम्॥

anujñātaś ca bhavatā pūrvam eva yad asmy aham
kim idānīṁ punar idaṁ kriyate me nivāraṇam

anujñātaḥ ca = have permitted; bhavatā = You; pūrvam eva = already; yat = since; asmi aham = Me; kim = why; idānīm punaḥ idam = now; kriyate me nivāraṇam = are You restraining Me.

Since You have already permitted Me, why are You now restraining Me?

Lakṣmaṇa was already permitted [to accompany Rāma to the forest]:

nigṛhya roṣaṁ śokaṁ ca dhairyam āśritya kevalam
avamānaṁ nirasyemaṁ gṛhītvā harṣam uttamam

“Control Your fury at Our father and others as well as Your distress at My situation. Always be sober and give up Your feeling of being humiliated. Become perfectly happy and set aside everything that You have put on for My coronation today. Quickly do that faultless activity that needs to be done.”1 (Rāmāyaṇa 2.22.3-4)

tasmād aparitāpaḥ saṁs tvam apy anuvidhāya mām
pratisaṁhāraya kṣipram ābhiṣecanikīṁ kriyām

“Therefore, giving up Your distress, You should also do what I say. Quickly stop the decoration and other preparations for My coronation.”2 (Rāmāyaṇa 2.22.26)

bhrātṛ-putra-samau cāpi draṣṭavyau ca viśeṣataḥ
tvayā bharata-śatrughnau prāṇaiḥ priyatarau mama

“You should especially consider Bharata and Śatrughna, who are dearer to Me than My very life, to be like a brother or son to you.”3 (Rāmāyaṇa 2.26.33)

In this last verse, [Sītā-devī] is only instructed to follow Bharata and Śatrughna [with no mention of Lakṣmaṇa]. Therefore it was obvious [to Lakṣmaṇa] that Rāma had permitted [Him to accompany Him to the forest].

1]. This is Śrī Rāma to Śrī Lakṣmaṇa.

2 This is also Rāmacandra speaking to Lakṣmaṇa. He has not instructed Lakṣmaṇa here and before and after about how Lakṣmaṇa should spend time in Ayodhyā. One might argue that Rāma, however, wanted to instruct Lakṣmaṇa about it later on, but the next quotation sets aside that objection.

3 This is Rāma speaking to Sītā-devī. As the commentator explains, Rāma has only mentioned Bharata and Śatrughna as being in Ayodhyā and hence to be respected by Mother Sītā whom He instructed at that time to stay in Ayodhyā. Till now, Rāmacandra has been very silent about Lakṣmaṇa being in Ayodhyā. Lakṣmaṇa, being Rāma’s right hand, intuitively sensed Rāma’s thoughts and therefore stated that He had already permitted Lakṣmaṇa to accompany Rāma to the forest. It should also be noted that Daśaratha till now has not explicitly spoken a single word to Rāma to go to the forest, though it was implicit that he wanted it to happen, by Kaikeyī’s nagging, of course.
