Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 31: Rāma Allows Lakṣmaṇa to Follow Him to the Forest
Text 2.31.15
तामार्यां स्वयमेवेह राजानुग्रहणेन वा।
सौमित्रे भर कौसल्यामुक्तमर्थमिमं चर॥
tām āryāṁ svayam eveha rājānugrahaṇena vā
saumitre bhara kausalyām uktam artham imaṁ cara
tām = of the; āryām = noble; svayam eva = personally; iha = here; rāja-anugrahaṇena = with the permission of the king; vā = or; saumitre = O son of Sumitrā; bhara = take care; kausalyām = Kausalyā; uktam artham imam = what I have told [You]; cara = do.
O son of Sumitrā, take care of the noble Kausalyā here with the permission of the king or personally. Do what I have told [You].
Lakṣmaṇa had to take care of Kausalyā with the king’s permission, but if it is not forthcoming, He would have to take care of her personally. “Do what I have told You” implies that Lakṣmaṇa should not argue back.
