Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 31: Rāma Allows Lakṣmaṇa to Follow Him to the Forest
Text 2.31.14
न स्मरिष्यति कौसल्यां सुमित्रां च सुदुःखिताम्।
भरतो राज्यमासाद्य कैकेय्यां पर्यवस्थितः॥
na smariṣyati kausalyāṁ sumitrāṁ ca suduḥkhitām
bharato rājyam āsādya kaikeyyāṁ paryavasthitaḥ
na = not; smariṣyati = will remember; kausalyām = Kausalyā; sumitrām = Sumitrā; ca = and; suduḥkhitām = the very distressed; bharataḥ = Bharata; rājyam = the kingdom; āsādya = after acquiring; kaikeyyām = to Queen Kaikeyī; paryavasthitaḥ = devoted.
Devoted to Queen Kaikeyī, Bharata will not remember the very distressed Kausalyā and Sumitrā after acquiring the kingdom.
If Lakṣmaṇa were to worry, “But how can I take care of them?” Rāma has an answer to that in the next verse.
