Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 31: Rāma Allows Lakṣmaṇa to Follow Him to the Forest
Text 2.31.27
भवांस्तु सह वैदेह्या गिरिसानुषु रंस्यते।
अहं सर्वं करिष्यामि जाग्रतः स्वपतश्च ते॥
bhavāṁs tu saha vaidehyā giri-sānuṣu raṁsyate
ahaṁ sarvaṁ kariṣyāmi jāgrataḥ svapataś ca te
bhavān tu = You; saha = with; vaidehyā = Vaidehī; giri-sānuṣu = on the mountain plains; raṁsyate = will sport; aham = I; sarvam = everything; kariṣyāmi = will do; jāgrataḥ = while You are awake; svapataḥ ca = or asleep; te = for You.
You will sport with Vaidehī on the mountain plains.1 I will do everything for You while You are awake or asleep.
1 Meaning, “You can sport with Vaidehī on the mountain plains.”
Lakṣmaṇa has spelt out the menial services He would render at all places. Now, because such services are relishable when performed for a qualified object of service, He points out [that Rāma is] the qualified object of service. “For You whether You are awake or asleep” indicates that He would engage in menial services appropriate to all times and circumstances. “I will do everything” indicates that He would engage in all kinds of menial services.
It is thus pointed out that the servants should engage in all kinds of services unto the master and His consort at all places, all times and in all circumstances.
