Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 34: Rāma, Lakṣmaṇa and Sītā Meet Daśaratha
Text 2.34.1

ततः कमलपत्राक्षः श्यामो निरुदरो महान्।
उवाच रामस्तं सूतं पितुराख्याहि मामिति॥

tataḥ kamala-patrākṣaḥ śyāmo nirudaro mahān
uvāca rāmas taṁ sūtaṁ pitur ākhyāhi mām iti

tataḥ kamala-patrākṣaḥ = His eyes were like lotuses; śyāmaḥ = was dark in complexion; nirudaraḥ = and His body was slender; mahān = the great soul; uvāca = He had told; rāmaḥ = Rāma; tam = the; sūtam = sūta; pituḥ = My father; ākhyāhi = inform; mām iti = about Me.

The great soul Rāma was dark in complexion. His eyes were like lotuses and His body was slender. He had told the sūta, “Inform My father about Me.”

The author now summarily describes what He had mentioned at the end of the previous chapter.

GLOSS. Nirudaraḥ also indicates that Rāma had no doubts [about what He was doing].1 Previously Rāma wanted Sumantra to tell Daśaratha that He had arrived. Now He wanted Sumantra to tell his father that Sītā and Lakṣmaṇa had arrived.2
