Chapter 34: Rāma, Lakṣmaṇa and Sītā Meet Daśaratha
Text 2.34.5
तं वर्धयित्वा राजानं सुतः पूर्वं जयाशिषा।
भयविक्लवया वाचा मन्दया श्लक्ष्णमब्रवीत्॥
taṁ vardhayitvā rājānaṁ sūtaḥ pūrvaṁ jayāśiṣā
bhaya-viklavayā vācā mandayā ślakṣṇam abravīt
tam = the; vardhayitvā = honored; rājānam = king; sūtaḥ = the sūta; pūrvam = first; jaya-āśiṣā = with benedictions for his victory; bhaya-viklavayā = [that expressed] his fear and perplexity; vācā = in words; mandayā = and softly; ślakṣṇam = gently; abravīt = he then spoke.
The sūta first honored the king with benedictions for his victory. He then gently and softly spoke in words [that expressed] his fear and perplexity.
