Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 34: Rāma, Lakṣmaṇa and Sītā Meet Daśaratha
Text 2.34.23

लक्ष्मणं चानुजानीहि सीता चान्वेति मां वनम्।
कारणैर्बहुभिस्तथ्यैर्वार्यमाणौ न चेच्छतः॥

lakṣmaṇaṁ cānujānīhi sītā cānveti māṁ vanam
kāraṇair bahubhis tathyair vāryamāṇau na cecchataḥ

lakṣmaṇam = Lakṣmaṇa; ca = too; anujānīhi = please permit; sītā = Sītā; ca = also; anveti = is following; mām = Me; vanam = to the forest; kāraṇaiḥ = reasons; bahubhiḥ = for various; tathyaiḥ = excellent; vāryamāṇau = [though] I prevented them; na ca = not; icchataḥ = they do want [to stay here].

Please permit Lakṣmaṇa too. Sītā is also following Me to the forest. [Though] I prevented them for various excellent reasons, they do not want to stay here.1

Kāraṇaiḥ indicates that Rāma had explained that [life in the forest would be] distressful and so on. Yet Lakṣmaṇa and Mother Sītā wanted to follow Him.

1]. Tathyaiḥ indicates that Rāma had given spiritual reasons—not just practical reasons as a commentator has misunderstood—and yet Lakṣmaṇa and Sītā-devī had decided to accompany Him.
