Chapter 34: Rāma, Lakṣmaṇa and Sītā Meet Daśaratha
Text 2.34.39
अथ रामस्तथा श्रुत्वा पितुरार्तस्य भाषितम्।
लक्ष्मणेन सह भ्रात्रा दीनो वचनमब्रवीत्॥
atha rāmas tathā śrutvā pitur ārtasya bhāṣitam
lakṣmaṇena saha bhrātrā dīno vacanam abravīt
atha rāmaḥ = Rāma; tathā = these; śrutvā = upon hearing; pituḥ = father; ārtasya = of His distressed; bhāṣitam = words; lakṣmaṇena = Lakṣmaṇa; saha = with; bhrātrā = His brother; dīnaḥ = became worried; vacanam = the following words; abravīt = and spoke.
Upon hearing these words of His distressed father, Rāma became worried and spoke the following words with His brother Lakṣmaṇa.
1 Queen Kaikeyī had instructed Rāmacandra to go to the forest that very day.
Rāma was worried that He could not make His father happy by being with him for even one day [as requested by the king].1
