Chapter 34: Rāma, Lakṣmaṇa and Sītā Meet Daśaratha
Text 2.34.61

देव्यस्ततः संरुरुदुः समेतास्तां वर्जयित्वा नरदेवपत्नीम्।
रुदन्सुमत्रोऽपि जगाम मूर्च्छां हाहाकृतं तत्र बभूव सर्वम्॥

devyas tataḥ saṁruruduḥ sametās
tāṁ varjayitvā naradeva-patnīm
rudan sumantro ’pi jagāma mūrcchāṁ
hā-hā-kṛtaṁ tatra babhūva sarvam

devyaḥ = queens of King Daśaratha; tataḥ = then; saṁruruduḥ = cried piteously; sametāḥ = the assembled; tām = the cruel; varjayitvā = except; naradeva-patnīm = Queen Kaikeyī; rudan = while crying; sumantraḥ = Sumantra; api = also; jagāma mūrcchām = fainted; --kṛtam = cried, “alas, alas”; tatra = there; babhūva sarvam = the assistants and everyone else.

The assembled queens of King Daśaratha except the cruel Queen Kaikeyī then cried piteously. Sumantra also fainted while crying . The assistants and everyone else there cried, “Alas! Alas!”

Kaikeyī had cruelly ordered Rāma:

rāma tasmād itaḥ śīghraṁ
vanaṁ tvaṁ gantum arhasi

“Rāma, quickly go to the forest from here.” (Rāmāyaṇa 2.19.14)
