Chapter 37: Rāma, Lakṣmaṇa and Sītā Wear Clothes of Bark
Text 2.37.30
न ह्यदत्तां महीं पित्रा भरतः शास्तुमर्हति।
त्वयि वा पुत्रवद्वस्तुं यदि जातो महीपतेः॥
na hy adattāṁ mahīṁ pitrā bharataḥ śāstum arhati
tvayi vā putravad vastuṁ yadi jāto mahī-pateḥ
na hi = never; adattām = that has not been lovingly given to him; mahīm = the earth; pitrā = by His father; bharataḥ = Bharata; śāstum = rule over; arhati = He should; tvayi = under you; vā = or; putravat = as your son; vastum = reside [here]; yadi = if; jātaḥ = is born; mahī-pateḥ = to the king.
If Bharata is born to the king, He should never rule over the earth that has not been lovingly given to Him by His father or reside [here] under you as your son.
