यद्यपि त्वं क्षितितलाद्गगनं चोत्पतिष्यसि।
पितृवंशचरित्रज्ञः सोऽन्यथा न करिष्यति॥
yady api tvaṁ kṣiti-talād gaganaṁ cotpatiṣyasi
pitṛ-vaṁśa-caritrajñaḥ so ’nyathā na kariṣyati
yadi api = even if; tvam = you; kṣiti-talāt = from the ground; gaganam ca = to the skies; utpatiṣyasi = fly up; pitṛ-vaṁśa-caritrajñaḥ = who knows the conduct of the dynasty of His father; saḥ = Bharata; anyathā = otherwise; na = will never; kariṣyati = conduct Himself.
Even if you fly up to the skies from the ground, Bharata who knows the conduct of the dynasty of His father will never conduct Himself otherwise.1
1 The conduct of Bharata’s father’s dynasty was to never appoint a king’s younger son in the presence of the elder son. Bharata knew that and therefore He would never sit on the throne in the presence of His elder brother, even if Kaikeyī “flies up to the skies from the ground,” that is, even if she does everything she could.
