Chapter 40: Rāma Departs from Ayodhyā
Text 2.40.4
तं वन्दमानं रुदती माता सौमित्रिमब्रवीत्।
हितकामा महाबाहुं मूर्ध्न्युपाघ्राय लक्ष्मणम्॥
taṁ vandamānaṁ rudatī mātā saumitrim abravīt
hita-kāmā mahā-bāhuṁ mūrdhny upāghrāya lakṣmaṇam
tam = unto her; vandamānam = offered obeisances; rudatī = in tears; mātā = His mother Sumitrā; saumitrim = to Him; abravīt = and spoke [the following]; hita-kāmā = for His welfare; mahā-bāhum = when the mighty-armed; mūrdhni = His head; upāghrāya = smelled; lakṣmaṇam = Lakṣmaṇa.
When the mighty-armed Lakṣmaṇa offered obeisances unto her, His mother Sumitrā in tears smelled His head and spoke [the following] to Him for His welfare.
