Chapter 41: Ayodhyā Suffers After Rāma’s Departure
Text 2.41.1
तस्मिंस्तु पुरुषव्याघ्रे विनिर्याते कृताञ्जलौ।
आर्तशब्दोऽथ संजज्ञे स्त्रीणामन्तःपुरे महान्॥
tasmiṁs tu puruṣa-vyāghre viniryāte kṛtāñjalau
ārta-śabdo ’tha saṁjajñe strīṇām antaḥ-pure mahān
tasmin tu puruṣa-vyāghre = when Prince Rāma; viniryāte = departed; kṛta-añjalau = with His palms joined in supplication; ārta-śabdaḥ = a cry of lamentation; atha saṁjajñe = arose; strīṇām = among the ladies; antaḥ-pure = in the inner quarters; mahān = great.
When Prince Rāma departed with His palms joined in supplication, a great cry of lamentation arose among the ladies in the inner quarters.
Lord Rāma had joined His palms in supplication before His father surrounded by His mothers. “A great cry of lamentation arose among the ladies in the inner quarters” means “A great cry of lamentation arose among the ladies who resided in the inner quarters and who had come to be with Daśaratha.”
