Chapter 41: Ayodhyā Suffers After Rāma’s Departure
Text 2.41.8
स तमन्तःपुरे घोरमार्तशब्दं महीपतिः।
पुत्रशोकाभिसन्तप्तः श्रुत्वा चासीत्सुदुःखितः॥
sa tam antaḥ-pure ghoram ārta-śabdaṁ mahī-patiḥ
putra-śokābhisantaptaḥ śrutvā cāsīt suduḥkhitaḥ
saḥ = the; tam = that; antaḥ-pure = in the inner quarters; ghoram = terrible; ārta-śabdam = sound of lamentation; mahī-patiḥ = king; putra-śoka-abhisantaptaḥ = who was burning in anxiety about his son; śrutvā ca = upon hearing; āsīt = became; suduḥkhitaḥ = more distressed.
Upon hearing that terrible sound of lamentation in the inner quarters, the king who was burning in anxiety about his son became more distressed.
