Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 41: Ayodhyā Suffers After Rāma’s Departure
Text 2.41.9
नाग्निहोत्राण्यहूयन्त नापचन्गृहमेधिनः।
अकुर्वन्न प्रजाः कार्यं सूर्यश्चान्तरधीयत॥
nāgni-hotrāṇy ahūyanta nāpacan gṛha-medhinaḥ
akurvan na prajāḥ kāryaṁ sūryaś cāntaradhīyata
na = not; agni-hotrāṇi = the agnihotra sacrifices; ahūyanta = were performed; na = not; apacan = did cook; gṛha-medhinaḥ = householders; akurvan = did carry out; na = not; prajāḥ = the subjects; kāryam = their duties; sūryaḥ = the sun; ca = and; antaradhīyata = disappeared.
The agnihotra sacrifices were not performed. Householders did not cook. The subjects did not carry out their duties and the sun disappeared.
The agnihotra sacrifices were not performed because the fires had disappeared and because of the anguish of the sacrificers. The sun disappeared, that is, it became devoid of its prowess.
