Chapter 41: Ayodhyā Suffers After Rāma’s Departure
Text 2.41.19
अनर्थिनः सुताः स्त्रीणां भर्तारो भ्रातरस्तथा।
सर्वे सर्वं परित्यज्य राममेवान्वचिन्तयन्॥
anarthinaḥ sutāḥ strīṇāṁ bhartāro bhrātaras tathā
sarve sarvaṁ parityajya rāmam evānv acintayan
anarthinaḥ = disregarded their mothers; sutāḥ = infants; strīṇām = their wives; bhartāraḥ = husbands disregarded; bhrātaraḥ tathā = brothers disregarded their brothers; sarve = everyone with affection; sarvam = everyone else; parityajya = abandoned; rāmam = of Rāma; eva = only; anu = and; acintayan = thought.
Infants disregarded their mothers. Husbands disregarded their wives. Brothers disregarded their brothers. Everyone with affection abandoned everyone else and only thought of Rāma.
Infants disregarded their mothers, that is, they disregarded the breast milk of their mothers.
