Chapter 42: Daśaratha Goes to Kausalyā’s Residence in Distress

न पश्यति रजोऽप्यस्य यदा रामस्य भूमिपः।
तदार्तश्च विषण्णश्च पपात धरणीतले॥
na paśyati rajo ’py asya yadā rāmasya bhūmipaḥ
tadārtaś ca viṣaṇṇaś ca papāta dharaṇī-tale
na = not; paśyati = did see; rajaḥ = the dust raised by; api = even; asya1 yadā = when; rāmasya = Rāma’s [chariot]; bhūmipaḥ = the king; tadā ārtaḥ ca = [he became] pained in body; viṣaṇṇaḥ = distressed [in mind]; ca = and; papāta = and then fell; dharaṇī-tale = on the ground.
When the king did not even see the dust raised by Rāma’s [chariot], [he became] pained in body and distressed [in mind], and then fell on the ground.
