Chapter 42: Daśaratha Goes to Kausalyā’s Residence in Distress
Text 2.42.33
अथ रात्र्यां प्रपन्नायां कालरात्र्यामिवात्मनः।
अर्धरात्रे दशरथः कौसल्यामिदमब्रवीत्॥
atha rātryāṁ prapannāyāṁ kāla-rātryām ivātmanaḥ
ardha-rātre daśarathaḥ kausalyām idam abravīt
atha = then; rātryām = the night; prapannāyām = passed; kāla-rātryām = the night of [universal] dissolution; iva = as; ātmanaḥ = which appeared to him; ardha-rātre = in the middle of the night; daśarathaḥ = Daśaratha; kausalyām = to Kausalyā; idam = as follows; abravīt = spoke.
Then the night passed, which appeared to him as the night of [universal] dissolution. In the middle of the night, Daśaratha spoke to Kausalyā as follows.
