Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 44: Sumitrā Consoles Kausalyā
Text 2.44.10
शयानमनघं रात्रौ पितेवाभिपरिष्वजन्।
रश्मिभिः संस्पृशञ्शीतैश्चन्द्रमा ह्लादयिष्यति॥
śayānam anaghaṁ rātrau pitevābhipariṣvajan
raśmibhiḥ saṁspṛśañ śītaiś candramā hlādayiṣyati
śayānam = sleeping Rāma; anagham = the sinless; rātrau = at night; pitā = a father; iva = just as; abhipariṣvajan = affectionately embraces [his son]; raśmibhiḥ = rays; saṁspṛśan = touching Him; śītaiḥ = with his cooling; candramā = Candra; hlādayiṣyati = will delight.
Candra will delight the sinless sleeping Rāma at night, touching Him with his cooling rays, just as a father affectionately embraces [his son].
1 Rāma appeared in the Sūrya-vaṁśa.
GLOSS. Candra will embrace Rāma like a father because he is equal to Rāma’s original forefather Sūrya.1
