अयोध्यानिलयानां हि पुरुषाणां महायशाः।
बभूव गुणसम्पन्नः पूर्णचन्द्र इव प्रियः॥
स याच्यमानः काकुत्स्थः स्वाभिः प्रकृतिभिस्तदा।
कुर्वाणः पितरं सत्यं वनमेवान्वपद्यत॥
ayodhyā-nilayānāṁ hi puruṣāṇāṁ mahā-yaśāḥ
babhūva guṇa-sampannaḥ pūrṇa-candra iva priyaḥ
sa yācyamānaḥ kākutsthaḥ svābhiḥ prakṛtibhis tadā
kurvāṇaḥ pitaraṁ satyaṁ vanam evānvapadyata
ayodhyā-nilayānām hi = residing in Ayodhyā; puruṣāṇām = to the men; mahā-yaśāḥ = Rāma of great fame; babhūva = became; guṇa-sampannaḥ = endowed with auspicious attributes; pūrṇa-candraḥ = the full moon; iva = like; priyaḥ = dear; saḥ = He; yācyamānaḥ = begged [to stop]; kākutsthaḥ = the descendant of Kakutstha; svābhiḥ = [though] His; prakṛtibhiḥ tadā = subjects; kurvāṇaḥ = to make; pitaram = His father; satyam = true [to his promise]; vanam eva = to the forest; anvapadyata = continued on His way.
Endowed with auspicious attributes, Rāma of great fame became dear to the men residing in Ayodhyā like the full moon. [Though] His subjects begged the descendant of Kakutstha [to stop], He continued on His way to the forest to make His father true [to his promise].
