Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 45: The Brāhmaṇas from Ayodhyā Follow Rāma
Text 2.45.31

निश्चेष्टाहारसञ्चारा वृक्षैकस्थानविष्ठिताः।
पक्षिणोऽपि प्रयाचन्ते सर्वभूतानुकम्पिनम्॥

niśceṣṭāhāra-sañcārā vṛkṣaika-sthāna-viṣṭhitāḥ
pakṣiṇo ’pi prayācante sarva-bhūtānukampinam

niśceṣṭā-āhāra-sañcārāḥ = giving up their endeavors to fetch food; vṛkṣa-eka-sthāna-viṣṭhitāḥ = are simply sitting on the trees; pakṣiṇaḥ = the birds; api = even; prayācante = they are praying to You; sarva-bhūta-anukampinam = [because] You are compassionate upon all creatures.

The birds are simply sitting on the trees, giving up their endeavors to fetch food. Even they are praying to You [because] You are compassionate upon all creatures!

Thus, even the birds and immovable creatures lamented for Rāma’s departure.1

1 A student of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam will immediately notice that this is similar to the birds and trees in Vṛndāvana so lovingly attached to Kṛṣṇa. It is evident that these birds and trees in and out of Ayodhyā have great love for Rāma.
