Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 46: Rāma Leaves the Brāhmaṇas to go to the Forest
Text 2.46.12
सोऽश्वान्सुमत्रः संयम्य सूर्येऽस्तं समुपागते।
प्रभूतयवसान्कृत्वा बभूव प्रत्यनन्तरः॥
so ’śvān sumantraḥ saṁyamya sūrye ’staṁ samupāgate
prabhūta-yavasān kṛtvā babhūva pratyanantaraḥ
saḥ1 aśvān = the horses; sumantraḥ = Sumantra; saṁyamya = [then] tied; sūrye = when the sun; astam samupāgate = set; prabhūta-yavasān kṛtvā = fed them with abundant grass 1; babhūva pratyanantaraḥ = and stood near [them].
Sumantra [then] tied the horses when the sun set, fed them with abundant grass and stood near [them].
1 Technical note: saḥ sumantraḥ.
Pratyanantaraḥ also indicates that Sumantra understood his next set of duties after he tied the horses and fed them with abundant grass.
