Chapter 46: Rāma Leaves the Brāhmaṇas to go to the Forest
Text 2.46.23
पौरा ह्यात्मकृताद्दुःखाद्विप्रमोक्ष्या नृपात्मजैः।
न ते खल्वात्मना योज्या दुःखेन पुरवासिनः॥
paurā hy ātma-kṛtād duḥkhād vipramokṣyā nṛpātmajaiḥ
na te khalv ātmanā yojyā duḥkhena pura-vāsinaḥ
paurāḥ hi = the citizens; ātma-kṛtāt = that they cause; duḥkhāt = from distresses; vipramokṣyāḥ = should relieve; nṛpa-ātmajaiḥ = princes; na = not; te khalu = the; ātmanā = caused by oneself; yojyāḥ = should be subjected; duḥkhena = to distress; pura-vāsinaḥ = residents of the city.
Princes should relieve the citizens from distresses that they cause. The residents of the city should not be subjected to distress caused by oneself.
