Chapter 47: The Brāhmaṇas Return to Ayodhyā in Distress
Text 2.47.1

प्रभातायां तु शर्वयां पौरास्ते राघवं विना।
शोकोपहतनिचेश्चेष्टा बभूवुर्हतचेतसः॥

prabhātāyāṁ tu śarvaryāṁ paurās te rāghavaṁ vinā
śokopahata-niśceṣṭā babhūvur hata-cetasaḥ

prabhātāyām tu = turned into dawn; śarvaryām = when the night; paurāḥ = residents of the city; te = the; rāghavam = Rāghava; vinā = without; śoka-upahata-niśceṣṭāḥ = became tormented by sorrow and hence helpless; babhūvur = [indeed] they became; hata-cetasaḥ = senseless.

When the night turned into dawn, the residents of the city became tormented by sorrow and hence helpless. [Indeed] they became senseless without Rāghava.

[In this chapter,] the author describes the activities of the residents of Ayodhyā.
