Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 47: The Brāhmaṇas Return to Ayodhyā in Distress
Text 2.47.2

शोकजाश्रुपरिद्यूना वीक्षमाणास्ततस्ततः।
आलोकमपि रामस्य न पश्यन्ति स्म दुःखिताः॥

śokajāśru-paridyūnā vīkṣamāṇās tatas tataḥ
ālokam api rāmasya na paśyanti sma duḥkhitāḥ

śokaja-aśru-paridyūnāḥ = exhausted by [crying] tears of distress; vīkṣamāṇāḥ = they looked about; tataḥ tataḥ = here and there; ālokam = a sign; api = even; rāmasya = of Rāma; na paśyanti sma = they didn’t find; duḥkhitāḥ = [and so] they became distressed.

Exhausted by [crying] tears of distress, they looked about here and there. They didn’t find even a sign of Rāma [and so] they became distressed.

They could not even find a sign of Rāma, that is, dust [marks] of Rāma’s chariot.
