Chapter 47: The Brāhmaṇas Return to Ayodhyā in Distress
Text 2.47.8
सन्ति शुष्काणि काष्ठानि प्रभूतानि महान्ति च।
तैः प्रज्वाल्य चितां सर्वे प्रविशामोऽथ पावकम्॥
santi śuṣkāṇi kāṣṭhāni prabhūtāni mahānti ca
taiḥ prajvālya citāṁ sarve praviśāmo ’tha pāvakam
santi = there are; śuṣkāṇi = dry; kāṣṭhāni = pieces of wood here; prabhūtāni = many; mahānti = large; ca = and; taiḥ prajvālya = setting them on fire; citām = for our funeral; sarve = let us all; praviśāmaḥ = enter; atha = or else; pāvakam = the fire.
Or else, there are many dry and large pieces of wood [here]. Setting them on fire for our funeral, let all of us enter the fire.
NOTE. The very fact that they were unable to consider living in the absence of the Lord indicates they were the kind of devotees mentioned by Lord Kṛṣṇa in Bhagavad-gītā (10.9):
mac-cittā mad-gata-prāṇā bodhayantaḥ parasparam
kathayantaś ca māṁ nityaṁ tuṣyanti ca ramanti ca
“The thoughts of My pure devotees dwell in Me, their lives are fully devoted to My service, and they derive great satisfaction and bliss from always enlightening one another and conversing about Me.”
