Chapter 47: The Brāhmaṇas Return to Ayodhyā in Distress
Text 2.47.12
इतीव बहुधा वाचो बाहुमुद्यम्य ते जनाः।
विलपन्ति स्म दुःखार्ता विवत्सा इव धेनवः॥
itīva bahudhā vāco bāhum udyamya te janāḥ
vilapanti sma duḥkhārtā vivatsā iva dhenavaḥ
iti iva = thus; bahudhā = in many; vācaḥ = words; bāhum = their arms; udyamya = lifted and; te = those; janāḥ = people; vilapanti sma = lamented; duḥkha-ārtāḥ = they were anguished by distress; vivatsāḥ = deprived of their calves; iva = like; dhenavaḥ = cows.
Those people lifted their arms and lamented thus in many words. They were anguished by distress like cows deprived of their calves.
