Chapter 47: The Brāhmaṇas Return to Ayodhyā in Distress
Text 2.47.15

ततो यथागतेनैव मार्गेण क्लान्तचेतसः।
अयोध्यामगमन्सर्वे पुरीं व्यथितसज्जनाम्॥

tato yathāgatenaiva mārgeṇa klānta-cetasaḥ
ayodhyām agaman sarve purīṁ vyathita-saj-janām

tataḥ yathā-āgatena eva = they had taken while coming from Ayodhyā; mārgeṇa = through the route; klānta-cetasaḥ = their minds tired; ayodhyām = Ayodhyā; agaman = went to; sarve = all of them; purīm = the city of; vyathita-sat-janām = the city was filled with distressed saintly persons.

All of them, their minds tired, went to the city of Ayodhyā through the route they had taken while coming from Ayodhyā. The city was filled with distressed saintly persons.1 

1 All saintly persons in Ayodhyā were distressed over Rāma’s departure. This intentionally excludes Kaikeyī and Mantharā.
