Chapter 47: The Brāhmaṇas Return to Ayodhyā in Distress
Text 2.47.18
चन्द्रहीनमिवाकाशं तोयहीनमिवार्णवम्।
अपश्यन्निहतानन्दं नगरं ते विचेतसः॥
candra-hīnam ivākāśaṁ toya-hīnam ivārṇavam
apaśyan nihatānandaṁ nagaraṁ te vicetasaḥ
candra-hīnam = devoid of the moon; iva = the city resembled; ākāśam = the sky; toya-hīnam iva = devoid of water; arṇavam = and the ocean; apaśyan = they noticed that; nihata-ānandam nagaram = the city’s happiness had been destroyed; te = [and so] they; vicetasaḥ = became senseless.
They noticed that the city’s happiness had been destroyed [and so] they became senseless. The city resembled the sky devoid of the moon and the ocean devoid of water.
