ते तानि वेश्मानि महाधनानि दुःखेन दुःखोपहता विशन्तः।
नैव प्रजज्ञुः स्वजनं जनं वा निरीक्षमाणाः प्रविनष्टहर्षाः॥
te tāni veśmāni mahā-dhanāni
duḥkhena duḥkhopahatā viśantaḥ
naiva prajajñuḥ sva-janaṁ janaṁ vā
nirīkṣamāṇāḥ pravinaṣṭa-harṣāḥ
te = they; tāni veśmāni = their houses; mahā-dhanāni = filled with great wealth; duḥkhena = distressed; duḥkha-upahatāḥ = [because] they themselves were overcome by distress; viśantaḥ = while entering; na eva = not even; prajajñuḥ = could recognize; sva-janam = their relatives; janam = [other] residents of the city; vā = or; nirīkṣamāṇāḥ = [though] they saw them; pravinaṣṭa-harṣāḥ = their joy had been fully vanquished.
While entering their houses filled with great wealth, they could not even recognize their distressed relatives or [other] residents of the city [though] they saw them [because] they themselves were overcome by distress. Their joy had been fully vanquished.
