Chapter 48: The Ladies in Ayodhyā Lament
Text 2.48.1-2

तेषामेवं विषण्णानां पीडितानामतीव च।
बाष्पविप्लुतनेत्राणां सशोकानां मुमूर्षया॥

अनुगम्य निवृत्तानां रामं नगरवासिनाम्।
उद्गतानीव सत्त्वानि बभूवुरमनस्विनाम्॥

teṣām evaṁ viṣaṇṇānāṁ pīḍitānām atīva ca
bāṣpa-vipluta-netrāṇāṁ saśokānāṁ mumūrṣayā

anugamya nivṛttānāṁ rāmaṁ nagara-vāsinām
udgatānīva sattvāni babhūvur amanasvinām

teṣām = the; evam viṣaṇṇānām = were thus dejected; pīḍitānām = tormented; atīva ca = extremely; bāṣpa-vipluta-netrāṇām = their eyes overflowed with tears; saśokānām = and distressed; mumūrṣayā = with the desire to die; anugamya = they had followed; nivṛttānām = and returned [without Him]; rāmam = Rāma; nagara-vāsinām = residents of Ayodhyā; udgatāni = to have left [their bodies]; iva sattvāni babhūvuḥ = and their life-airs appeared 1; amanasvinām = they lost their patience.

The residents of Ayodhyā were thus dejected and distressed with the desire to die. Extremely tormented, their eyes overflowed with tears. They had followed Rāma and returned [without Him]. They lost their patience and their life-airs appeared to have left [their bodies].
