गृहे गृहे रुदन्त्यश्च भर्तारं गृहमागतम्।
व्यगर्हयन्त दुःखार्ता वाग्भिस्तोत्रैरिव द्विपान्॥
gṛhe gṛhe rudantyaś ca bhartāraṁ gṛham āgatam
vyagarhayanta duḥkhārtā vāgbhis totrair iva dvipān
gṛhe gṛhe = in every home; rudantyaḥ ca = lamented; bhartāram = their respective husbands; gṛham = home; āgatam = who had returned without Rāma; vyagarhayanta = they criticized; duḥkha-ārtāḥ = the ladied anguishing in distress; vāgbhiḥ = with the following words; totraiḥ = with their goads; iva = like [mahouts poking]; dvipān = elephants.
In every home, the ladies anquishing in distress lamented. Like [mahouts poking] elephants with their goads, they criticized their respective husbands who had returned home without Rāma with the following words.
1 A husband is expected to be more advanced as a Vaiṣṇava than his wife. As such, these ladies teach the men who aspire to become genuine Vaiṣṇavas that they have to fully surrender unto the Supreme Personality of Godhead in order to be respected as such by women who aspire to become genuine Vaiṣṇavīs.
All women criticized their respective husbands, “Why did you come home?” Their criticism will be elaborated now.1
